Life After Kindle Scout

Overall, I’ve been happy with the Kindle Scout experience. My new book gained visibility and buzz from my campaign, I learned a lot, and made valuable connections. Unfortunately, I didn’t win the contest, the “American Idol for books.” “A Storm of Stories” is going to be published by Crimson Cloud Media LLC instead. I’m grateful for everyone who voted and supported me during this chapter. Now it’s time to move forward and publish this book! To be honest, I never thought I’d win Kindle Scout. Kindle Scout editors overwhelmingly choose mystery, romance and science fiction. The site also favors these listings by allowing them to be listed in multiple categories, which makes them more visible and likely to be hot and trending. If the literary books are underdogs in this contest, “A Storm of Stories” was in the underdog category. At the end of the day, my book simply didn’t have enough votes or visibility on the site. I’m not complaining. The contest was a lot more fun than a cover reveal and was part of my book launch strategy. I actually learned a lot from Kindle Scout and I didn’t spend a single dollar. I learned where my readers are coming from, the links that drive them toward my book. And that complete strangers like my first chapter and book cover enough to vote for "A Storm of Stories." This was obvious when my book was listed more favorably in the ending soon category. I built excitement for the book and was wowed by the kindness and support of my friends, family and readers. A big thank you to everyone who voted!

I don’t regret giving Kindle Scout a try. You’ve got to put yourself out there. Over and over I’ve learned that as a writer. It’s not enough to write a good novel. You have to take it out of the drawer and share it. You have to tell people about it. You have to give people a chance to love it or hate it, to feel something either way. I’m looking forward to getting the book out there soon! It’s in the layout and final proofing stages now, so I've got to get back to work...
